Interviews with Allan Shivers concerning his experiences in the Texas Senate (1934-1945), his term as lieutenant governor (1946-1949), and his terms as Texas governor (1949-1957). Shivers discusses the political career of Lyndon Johnson, the Stevenson-Eisenhower senatorial race of 1948, the Stevenson-Eisenhower presidential campaign of 1952, the Johnson presidential race of 1960, Texas Democratic politics (1952-1956), the Fifty-third State Legislature, and the governor's role in the state party organization. He also talks about the state Democratic convention of 1951, the gubernatorial election of 1954, the Veteran's Land Board controversy (1954-1955), the insurance scandals of the mid-1950s, and being considered a lame-duck governor.
